Feb. 8, 2013 – Did you hear about the Forest Fire in Clarkesville on Wednesday?
Georgia Forestry Commission officials are still trying to calculate the size of a large woods fire that burned north of Clarkesville.
Habersham County Assistant Fire Chief Jason Davey said that a resident of Hayden Ridge was burning hedge clippings around broom straw and it caught the grass on fire.
Chief Davey said the homeowner told him that he got the fire contained twice, but the wind kept blowing it out of control.
Davey said the man did not have a burn permit and waited almost an hour before calling 9-1-1.
Officials said Georgia Forestry Commission utilized two plows, an observation airplane, and a helicopter with water bucket to bring the fire under control.
Authorities said the fire was estimated at a good bit more than 25 acres, but the official amount of land area burned will not be available until early next week.
