GAINESVILLE — Gainesville’s City Council decided at Tuesday’s meeting not to implement a ban on pit bulls.
Gainesville resident Jean Brannon called on council members last month to ban the breed after she said her grandson had been mauled by a pit bull while running alone in a Cartersville neighborhood.
But City Attorney James E. “Bubba” Palmer advised the council that under Georgia law it could not exclude the ownership of a specific breed.
Mayor Danny Dunagan said the council won’t be taking any action on pit bulls, which drew praise from those present.
Councilwoman Ruth Bruner said the city’s ordinance that prohibits city dog owners from tethering their dogs was helping deal with the issue of unsocialized dogs.
Councilman George Wangemann said he initially considered banning the breed a good idea but had changed his mind.
