Sept. 18, 2013 – Gainesville City Council Tuesday night received a request to honor former Fire Chief Dick Taylor, who died in February this year.
Taylor was an avid railroad buff according to a friend, Sterling Callahan, who presented a 200 signature petition to honor Taylor at a well known downtown historic site.
“I wish to propose that the Engine 209 Park be renamed the Dick Taylor Railroad Park,” Callahan told Council.
Callahan said Taylor helped restore Engine 209 located at West Academy Street and Jesse Jewell Parkway in 2004.
He added that it is within city policy to honor deceased persons by naming city properties after them.
