Lutz’s City/County Merger Proposal Fails

GAINESVILLE — Hall County Commissioner Craig Lutz’s attempt to initiate unification talks with the city of Gainesville failed on a 3-2 vote yesterday.

Twenty years ago, Hall County voters approved a non-binding referendum to merge the city and county governments by a 2-1 margin. Following that vote, a study was conducted that demonstrated the benefits of such a merger, but not the cost savings and the initiative died.

But Lutz said the board should send a letter to city officials asking them to complete the work voters overwhelmingly supported 20 years ago.

Chairman Tom Oliver, Billy Powell, and Ashley Bell voted against Lutz’s motion, saying they preferred informal talks first. Commissioner Scott Gibbs supported Lutz’ motion.
