Jan. 7, 2013 – Saturday night a 12-year-old Buford seventh-grader collapsed during a basketball game and later died.
According to coach Bryan Larrieu, Jeremy Nelson collapsed during a Gwinnett Basketball League all-star game at the Suwanee Sports Academy at around 10:20 PM Saturday.
Larrieu told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “He was having a heck of a game when he pulled up from missing a shot. We pulled him out to get some rest, eight seconds later, he was in and out of consciousness.”
Officals said Nelson was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center where he later died.
Coach Larrieu said,“He was a phenomenal kid, with a great sense of humor, a loving kid.”
Larrieu coached the 6-foot player for four years.
Jeremy’s twin sister, Jessica, also plays basketball for Buford’s seventh-grade team. His older sister Kristina, a senior on the Buford high school team recently signed to play with Notre Dame.
DeMarcus Irons, who coached Jeremy for 2 years said, “He was just a wonderful kid, It’s a big loss. He represented everything good we were trying to do with these kids,” in the league.
